Old Guy’s Scripts

Talkback Comments and Guestbook Script

TalkBack is a richly featured comments script and guestbook script that uses PHP and mySQL. Comments can be added to any pages on your website. It uses Akismet anti spam blocking, configuration options, visitor subscriptions, email notices, themes, customizable templates, CSS styling, simple installation and easy yet powerfull administration. TalkBack is an on-going project under continuing development and support by the author. And it is free!

If you have been searching for a comments script or guestbook script to use on your website you are probably as frustrated as I was. A number of scripts exist but most are very basic and inadequate. Even the more fully featured scripts do not include satisfactory comments spam protection and often favor eye candy over functionality and ease of use. So I went to work. The result is TalkBack, simple yet powerful.

“The Best Darn Comment Script on the Web Today...Period!” says Jim at TeaDiscussion.com. Read his review of TalkBack.

TalkBack is free but donations are always appreciated, especially if you are using it on a commercial site or personal site that receives advertising revenue. If you want to remove the “Powered by TalkBack” link, a donation is required.

Rating TalkBack: if you decide to continue using it please take a few moments to return here and rate TalkBack on the scripts sites in the sidebar.

Requirements:

  • PHP 4.3 or higher on your web server
  • MySQL 3.23 or higher on your web server
  • For spam checking: an API key from a free WordPress account

Not bad, but its common script.

How about offering user to make talk back about them or their article / Photo. so users can register and make a page upload one photo and also a option for send it to freind to comment on their page / Photo thats make this type script unique.

Think about this.

Subject: Can this be set up as a "text only" comment system?

Is it possible to block people from posting images? And if so, how is that done. Thank you.

Luckily, about a year ago I went through this entire process to learn what it all meant. I can tell you, though, I really wish I would have had this resource to get me started! You wrote about on talkback.

Captchas and other passive anti-spam measures, besides being annoying to visitors (and difficult for old eyes like mine), do not stop spammers. They have found ways of defeating them. All such passive methods are, in my opinion, inadequate.

That’s why I chose an active method for TalkBack: the Askismet spam checking service. When the visitor submits a comment, TalkBack sends it to the Akismet server. It then evaluates the message and returns a spam or no-spam result. If it is not flagged as probable spam, TalkBack (subject to an override "moderate all comments" configuration setting) puts the comment in the database as an approved comment. If, however, Akismet flags it as probable spam, TalkBack puts the comment in the moderation queue for your approval or deletion.

You are basically leaving the job of staying one step ahead of spammers to Akismet. As spammers come up with new tricks the Akismet team will react faster and better than you or I could ever hope to.

How good is Akismet? Very. Between February and June of 2006 it flagged hundreds of comments on my blog as spam with no false positives or false negatives. Within 48 hours of installing TalkBack on my personal site, spammers were all over it like ants at a picnic. Akismet stopped them cold. It isn’t perfect though. Some users report occasional false positives and negatives.

Askismet is free for non-commercial users. Commercial sites must obtain a commercial license.
